The
Arches Theatre Company present 'Tam O'Shanter & Other Works',
the other works consist mainly of songs and poems that include the
themes of drinking and sex with one or two small animals thrown
inn for good measure.
The
four performers Johnny McKnight, Julie Brown, Kirstin McLean, Ross
Stenhouse and a musician, sing, dance and perform their way
through the show, with the highlight being that of the portrayal of
Tam.
At
first I thought the makeup macabre but the reasoning behind it
became apparent as the show went on. I enjoyed the clever use of
the flats on wheels which, depending on the lighting, were totally
opaque or reasonably translucent. The costumes are fun especially
those of the witches in Auld Alloway Kirk
This
is both an interesting introduction to the works of Burns and a
clever enacting of his works.
The only complaint I have is not with the show but the
audience member behind me who insisted in reciting the poetry but
not in time with the performers.
