The
small Mandrake Music Hall in London's Whitechapel has been coveted
by a large company, to be torn down and used as a warehouse. The
theatre manager Julius is doing all he can to secure the sale. He
does not however consider the company’s feelings and under the
guidance of our heroine and raconteur Hebe Weir with unexpected
help from beyond, fight to save the Music Hall and their livings.
This
musical monologue and ghost story is written and performed by
Tobias Stone as Hebe. It is peppered with music hall songs from
the Victorian and Edwardian periods, many of which are remembered
from shows such as the old time music hall from TV.
The
songs are beautifully performed, the ghost story chilling at times
and the costumes absolutely fabulous. The only down points in the
show are the seemingly endless blackouts when he changes costume,
the first of these had a voiceover which presumably set the scene
but was indistinguishable.
Interesting
and enjoyable show especially if he cuts out the gaps.
