I
am not Scottish, but have spent all of my adult life North of The
Border and thought I had a reasonable handle on Scotland and it’s
way of life and thinking, but having seen this fine performance by
comedy actress Karen Dunbar maybe I don’t.
This
play written by Denise Mina more known for her detective novels, is
rewrite of MacDairmid’s poem and attempts to shed some light on
what is a Scot, and how heroes of yore, such as Burns might not be
happy as to how they are remembered. In an often self-deprecating
way writer and actor question most things Scottish in the crusade to
pigeonhole what it is to be Scottish.
Ms
Dunbar puts her heart and soul into the role, with darkness and
light shadings to her performance, comedy and tragedy underlying her
true acting talents. This is play for Scots primarily, but was well
received by all.
