Night Time

Night Time is the work of Scottish based Croatian-born writer Selma Dimitrijevic. Holding the whole piece together is the splendid Kananu Kirimi as Christina, a married woman in her thirties. Ms Kirimi is ably supported by John Kazek as Frank, David Ireland as Thomas and Benny Young as Bowman, Christina’s fifty something year old husband.
The play opens with Christina entering Frank’s flat late at night. Frank’s kindness in providing Christina shelter from the cold and rain appears as an act of generosity, but is it since, apparently a stranger, he has greater knowledge of Christina than she is aware. Frank disappears and in Scene Two Christina is now in Thomas’s flat in the early morning. Without Christina’s memory he has little knowledge of what happened during the night.
Thomas disappears and the final Scene opens with Christina back at home sleeping on the sofa. Bowman enters the room. He is naturally angry at eventually discovering her disappearance during the night. Their relationship is at breaking point. The closing sequence is dramatic and shocking, leaving the audience to ponder the true nature of Christina’s character.
Night Time is a serious and indeed perplexing play, sparsely but beautifully staged and lit.
