Dickens unplugged, written and directed by
Adam Long, is musical comedy of a very high standard. The five,
highly talented guys from California romp their way through a
selection of Dickens novels throwing in a twist of the American
singing tradition on their musical journey – folk, country and
harmony singing.
Some of the novels receive the mini
treatment, a one minute Great Expectations. Others receive a more
developed version, David Copperfield, his life and loves.
Interspersed are scenes from Dickens private life. Coming into their
finale, A Christmas Carol, I thought this story has been done to
death it might be a let down. However I was mistaken. Great fun and
watch out for Tiny Tim as a rock guitarist.
Underpinning the whole performance is the
strong quality of the singing and musicianship. Under the sharp
direction of Adam Long the whole show bowls along seamlessly with
precise timing. When the obvious enjoyment of the audience is
communicated to the performers, their own enjoyment shines through.
This enhances the whole experience.
