What the Butler Saw
Rattlesnake! Theatre Company from Southampton University
Rattle snake! Theatre Company are based in Southampton and are performing two plays at this years Fringe, The Cripple of Inishmaan and the one I watched 'What the Butler Saw'
This classic Joe Orton farce is well staged by this young company in a back to basics style. I suppose the play is a little dated, but it has been a while since I had previously seen it I had forgotten how good it really was.
Set in the practice of Psychiatrist Dr Prentice played by Dan O'Neill, it has his 'nympho' wife, Joan How, a 'naked' secretary, Natalie Gowans a cross dressing bell hop, Matthew Halfpenny, an inept policeman played by James Hayward and Dr Rance a, delusional ‘watch-dog’ Stuart Rouse, could one ask for more.
Dr Prentice is caught in the act of trying to seduce his prospective new secretary and then the action begins as one things leads to another. The whole extravaganza is kept under control as it can be by director Edward Thackwell.
So go and witness this ribald romp and find out for yourself What the Butler Saw.
