Up 'N' Under
Harland Hamstrings Theatre Group
This classic piece of theatre, written by John Godber has been given the old Harland treatment and as with most of the adaptations they use, they add to the original rather than detract from it.
Every one will know the story either from seeing it before or from the movie version of a couple of years back in which former Rugby League star Arthur Hoyle makes an impossible bet with his richer, hated rival Reg Welsh that Arthur could train any team to beat Reg's super stars at the next 7-a-side tournament. The bet is struck and Arthur is 'given' the Wheatsheaf Arms team, who are not only hopeless but never have enough players either.
The story is now set, and with the audience updated in rhyming couplets delivered a la Pantomime Good Fairy style we are ready for the kick off.
Arthur, played by Harland mainstay Alan Hunter together with the Good Fairy who changes into gym owner Hazel, both roles performed by Amy Smith, gradually licks the team into some sort of condition for their grudge match against Reg's Cobblers Arms.
Tom Biglin, Danny Sirrs, Andy Wilson and Danny Carter make up the rest of the team, and all six excel in their roles and engage in some extensive choreography both in the gym sequence and on the rugby field.
So does Arthur secede at his challenge? To find out the answers to this and more visit the Subway and find out. You know you want too.
