Just
occasionally in my time of covering the Fringe I come across a gem
of a show, and usually in the most unexpected places. I must admit
I didn't expect to find this in School Ties but I was wrong, very
wrong.
This
production by the Brothers Kaufman has everything that makes it a
great shown. It has a funny script, catchy tunes, four fine
actresses who sing like angels and tight direction.
It
had a sort of 'Teechers - the Musical' feel about it but that is
not entirely fair as there is more to it than that.
The actresses play a variety of
characters pupils, both male and female and members of staff also,
and seem to be able to flit from character to character at will,
but always capturing the spirit of who they are portraying. Full
marks to Clare Hopes, Rebecca Gethings, Michelle Bunyan and Sally
Kent, I was in awe with the way you all coped.
The
songs, written by Julian Kaufman all had a feel that one would
leave the theatre whistling them and Julian on guitar, together
with Emma Finlay on keyboards, provided the musical accompaniment
as well.
It
can’t have been the easiest
space for Jonothan Kaufman to
direct
for, but it was achieved so that the pace of the show never
faltered.
So,
as the time is getting tight, grab your ticket NOW. This show
thoroughly deserves to go far. It is certainly in my top three of
the Fringe so far.
