We actually start at an audition for the
role of Desdemona, where an actress is rudely interrupted by
another female who then goes on to give a dreadful audition.
Scene changes and we find Jeane Mortenson
(Victoria Lewis) an ex-soap star, and the second female to
audition, preparing to go on as Desdemona.
She is constantly on the phone after reading her bad
reviews. Charlotte
Chambers (Victoria Pym) Jeans understudy and also the original
actress at the audition, comes in to say her dressing room is
flooded, could she possibly change in with Jeane.
As the plot unfolds Charlotte spreads
rumours
about Edith Myers (Sarah Lyle) the only other female in the cast.
Slowly working on Jeane’s insecurities, Charlotte tempts
her back to drinking the forbidden champagne, which
leads to the drinking of stronger spirits. When Edith finally appears Jeane turns on her ranting and
raving before finally collapsing.
With only minutes before the performance
the understudy has to go on.
Other twists and turns within the plot
brought me in mind of the play within the play, or perhaps life
imitating art, I thought the content of the plot very familiar!
Was I the only one?
