Ok reading the Fringe programme I should
have known that George Dillon’s ‘The Gospel of Matthew’ was
just that. It is his interpretation of the book of Matthew taken
from the Bible.
Cleverly written with some interesting
visual aids including texts presumably from the bible, as my
reading of Hebrew, Greek and any other ancient languages is
nonexistent. The give away was possibly those texts written in
English. The music that accompanied the piece was pleasant at the
time.
I do admire the performer’s memory, as
most of us know at least part of the script to one degree or
another, but to have to start off with Christ’s lineage and
rattle them off almost without seemingly to have to think too hard
about them is excellent. The
show is probably exhausting both mentally and physically as he
moves all over the stage with very few pauses. His
simple costume of white trousers and a white hooded tunic are very
in keeping with the material content of the show.
