1991
saw the birth of this 'classic' piece, which actually premiered in
Edinburgh, is given a dusting down and partial rework some twelve
years later.
The story in essence remains the same,
four Brits abroad who together with a German tour rep settle down
to watch the 1990 World Cup semi between England and Germany. The
play develops into the tragi-comical interaction of all 5 main
players as beer and patriotism together with complex interpersonal
relationships combine to heighten the tension. A lot of the
dialogue is fairly accurate to the events that took place on that
evening, but as those who know the show things do then to get a
little surreal towards the end.
I
mentioned a rework earlier and this takes the shape of the
introduction of Sven Garon Erikson and his sidekick 'Little Villie'
who appear as comperes, barmen and general observers. Why? begs
the question. The play, although slightly dated, still holds up in
my opinion, so why tinker with it when the changes add nothing of
value.
This
may sound negative, but it is still an enjoyable show and the use
of some puppetry of the aforesaid Mr Lineker certainly did add to
the performance.
