The Commitments
Harland Hamstrings Theatre Group
Harland Hamstrings are a young theatre troupe based in Hull and have been coming to the Fringe since 1996. I have to date only missed one of their shows and I have no intention of missing any of the seven, yes I did say seven this year.
The one thing that can always be said off this company is that they always produce quality shows, with an unbelievably talented group who have been well drilled and rehearsed by mentor Alan Hunter.
The Commitments is based on the Roddy Doyle novel which was a major success as a film, and the way this is transformed and adapted into a play in such a small space is a work of art in itself, as is the abridging, maintaining the essence of the story while allowing it to be a vehicle for the amazing singing voices that there seem to be an endless supply of in Hull.
Everybody knows the plot, that of a bunch of talented Irish kids forming a soul band and nearly making it, so I won't go on about it, just go and see the show, enjoy the acting and marvel at the voices, especially those of Daniel Casslasy as Deco, Kirsty Spencer as Bernie and Hester Ullyart as Natalie.
