There is no doubt that this offering from
Director James Toback is beautifully shot in modern New York
and skillfully acted, particularly Neve Campbell as Vera the
spoilt rich girl. However, the story line does not seem credible.
The essence of the film is that Ford
(Fred Weller), a good looking minor hustler, persuades his
girlfriend Vera to meet with the 69 year old Count (Dominic
Chianese), supposedly the wealthiest man in Italy, presumably for
sex, $100,000 being the agreed sum. The dialogue between Vera
and the Count on their first encounter is the dramatic high
point of the film. The subsequent action and final climax all
seem too pat and convenient.
Though always compelling helped by
dramatic and contrasting background music, it is basically a
simple story padded out with extraneous sequences, and the
characterisation of the Count is not at all convincing.
