An exposition of the cruelty of the
fashion industry in its treatment of a lonely and insecure model,
Frankie, only 26 years old but coming to the end of a seemingly
glamorous career. However, these themes of rejection and
loneliness could apply to any industry where the perfect
physical appearance forms a major yardstick to advancement.
Frankie, played beautifully by Diane
Kruger, ends up in a mental hospital where her recovery and
gain in confidence begin to emerge. Clever and clear direction by
Fabienne Berthaud intertwines the hospital sequences with the
flashbacks to the photo shoots which bring about Frankie's mental
breakdown. The choice of video to shoot the film gives a
documentary feel with effective use of close ups to appreciate
Frankie's inner fragility.
Essentially a dark story but moments
of subtle humour do raise this film above the ordinary.
