Up & Over It!   An Irish Dance Spectacular

*****
In amongst the simple desire to be entertained, there are particular joys in attending Fringe shows. These include taking a chance outwith the normal comfort zone and being rewarded with a most satisfying show; also watching artists taking a traditional form of artistic expression and breathing new life into it but still retaining respect for the tradition.
Suzanne Cleary and Peter Harding whose training and early performing career were steeped in the River Dance form of Irish dance as principals have given this dance form new directions. They perform around six extended pieces to dynamic background music. Each dance is preceded by film projected onto a back screen. This sets the context of the dance which follows.
They open with the stereotypical perception of Irish dance with flying rhymic feet and arms held to the side. The limitations this imposes are emphasised by the arms being encased in straightjackets. These are torn off and thus this escape allows the dancers free body movement. Their final dance after a journey involving excursions into ballet, comedy and contemporary dance is a beautiful free flowing and graceful interpretation of a simple piano melody performed in bare feet. The large stage area allows the dancers to reveal their stunning synchronised movement and sheer athleticism.
This is a show of exceptional quality.
