You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown

When I was young I was a big Snoopy fan, a fact which is backed up by a picture of me standing in my parents’ back garden wearing a pair of Snoopy slippers.  However it’s probably been a year or ten since I read the comic strip or watched the cartoon series.  This meant that my trip to see ‘You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown’ was spurred on by a sense of nostalgia, an attempt to recapture my love for the characters.  Of course, this also meant that there was a certain risk to seeing the live action stage show.  Would it live up to my fading childhood memories or would it seem twee and childlike to my adult brain?
I needn’t have worried.  This show is a fabulously energetic romp which reminded me of everything I enjoyed about the Peanuts world.  It’s a live-action embodiment of the cartoon strip with added musical bounce.  Charlie Brown is the lovable loser still pining after the ‘little red-headed girl’, Linus dispenses wisdom beyond his years whilst clinging determinedly to his comfort blanket and Lucy is a strident, bossy delight.  And, of course, there’s Snoopy.  Probably the hardest character to bring to live-action, but a performance which manages to balance the laconic and lazy with a certain adeptness for song and dance numbers.
I found this show an utter delight to watch and I think there’s a lot here for both adults and children to enjoy – much like the original comic strip.  The extremely talented cast is bubbling with enthusiasm, showcase considerable comic timing and make the most of their small surroundings.  Catch it while you can, Charlie Brown.
