Cambridge
University ADC has always had a good reputation for putting on Great
shows during the Fringe. The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe
continues this premise.
The difficulty of putting this book on
stage is cleverly aided by Adrian Mitchell's adaptation and Shaun
Davey's catchy music. The
potential cast of thousands is whittled down to 34 characters played
by 16 performers with a band of eight under Musical Director Luke
Rogers.
This
fast paced energetic production is very enjoyable although it is an
hour and a half as apposed to the normal hour-long Fringe Shows. It
covers the salient points clearly and cleverly and some of the
musical numbers I would like to hear again. The simple changes of
set and props are woven into the fabric of the piece and work
extremely well. The costumes are cleverly designed enabling those
with quick changes to cope easily.
There
are several main characters but it is obvious this talented bunch
work well together and have developed an impressive ensemble show.
The four children Peter (Edward Rowett, Susan (Hannah Lee), Edmund
(Rob Frimston) and Lucy (Emily Hardy) stay in character well
throughout. The White Witch (Megan Prosser) and her servant
Grumpskin (Lowri Amies) are excellent foils for each other as the
baddies. Mr and Mrs Beaver (Uriel Adiv and Natalie Kiesterton) add
some beautiful animal sanity to the piece. The rest of the cast have
multiple parts Lucy Marks, David F Walton, Julia Parlato, Holly
Hunt, Jenni Mackenzie and Freddie Hutchins.
Last but definitely not least we have Sami Abu-Wardeh as
Aslan. Although Aslan is not on stage for very long Sami slips well
into his paws and could be a useful advertising point to get the
audiences in to the theatre.
Take
a trip up the stairs to C +3 into the land of magic and make-believe
that is The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe.
