Grimm Tales

The tales collected by the Brothers Grimm are no doubt familiar to us all.  However, over the years these stories have evolved or been adapted to suit the sensibilities of the time.  The advent of the Disney Corporation has also succeeded in turning these moral fables into sickeningly sweet, sugar-coated shadows of their former selves.
It’s refreshing, therefore, to see the pupils from Gresham’s School present versions which hark back to the dark and disturbing origins of these popular tales.  In an adaptation of these stories by Carol Ann Duffy, these young performers excel their years with assured acting and narration, unique staging and musical accompaniment which breathes new life into the already familiar.
The choice of tales to tell are no surprise – Hansel & Gretel, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White and The Bremen Town Musicians – but children who have grown up on a diet of Walt may well relish seeing a more gruesome side to their old favourites.  It may not be suitable for the very young but if you have children of a school age then I recommend taking them along and letting them see what made these tales so very ‘Grimm’.
