There
was a fair amount of skepticism when it was announced that a third
Terminator film was in the offing. This was mainly because James
Cameron, creator and director of the first two films, was not to
be attached to the project in anyway. He felt that he had finished
the story that he wanted to tell after Terminator 2. However, when
Arnold Schwarzenegger confirmed that he would return the momentum
began to build.
The
final outcome is enjoyable enough, though it doesn’t quite stand
up to the first Terminator film, and come nowhere close to
matching the might of T2.
There
are a few additions to the cast as well. Nick Stahl takes over the
role of John Connor from Edward Furlong (who recently had some
drug-related problems). Claire Danes plays his love-interest (and
future wife), and Kristanna Loken plays the T-X, or Terminatrix,
the new and improved Terminator robot.
The
story does not require a great deal of thought and, at times,
seems just to be a means of joining some of the very impressive
chase sequences together. There are also some rather impressive
special effects, particularly the shape-shifting T-X.
Overall,
Terminator 3 is an enjoyable enough film, which is watchable for
both fans and newcomers alike. Just don’t expect it to match
either of its predecessors.
