Old School

Director: Todd Phillips
Stars: Luke Wilson. Vince Vaughn, Will Ferrell, Ellen Pompeo, Juliette Lewis, Leah Remini, Perrey Reeves, Craig Kilborn, Jeremy Piven
Certificate: 15
Running time: 90 minutes
Old School follows the story of three college friends who, now in their thirties, find that their lives are not as satisfying as they would have hoped for. After his girlfriend cheats on him, disillusioned lawyer Mitch moves into a house on the edge of a university campus. His friends Beanie, and Frank "The Tank" persuade him to turn it into a fraternity house after the University Dean threatens them with eviction.
The story focuses on Mitch, played by Luke Wilson (Legally Blone, The Royal Tenenbaums, and brother to Owen of Shanghai Noon & Shanghai Knights fame). He is likeable, and at times charming, as the lead character and is the steady one of the three leads, if sometimes not the funniest of the trio.
Vince Vaughn (Swingers, Made) is very good as Beanie. He does not have the sharp delivery style of his character in Swingers, but is funny as a devoted father who is still trying to be a sleazy party animal, and is the chief instigator of the frat-house idea.
Will Ferrell (Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, Zoolander) steals the show as Frank The Tank. Frank The Tank is a character who really does seem to have gone back to his heady college days, as he participates in drinking, smoking, and streaking!
The director, Todd Phillips, also wrote the script, and knows how to make a film involving college students funny, as he previously had a bit of success with Road Trip.
Overall, Old School is a very enjoyable film, with some gut-achingly funny scenes, and decent performances by the three leads. Worth a look if you enjoyed Road Trip and the American Pie films, as this has a very similar type of humor.
