Freddy v's Jason

Director: Ronny Yu
Stars: Ken Kirzinger, Monica Keena, Robert Englund
Certificate: 18
If you believe what you read, Freddy Vs Jason is something that horror fans have been waiting to see for quite some time. I’m not a big horror fan, so I can’t really say either way.
The basic story is that Freddy Krueger, from the Nightmare On Elm Street series, is dead, because nobody remembers him. If nobody remembers him, then nobody can fear him. Without people fearing him, Freddy has no power, so he has to make people fear him again. To do this he brings Jason Voorhees, from the numerous Friday The 13th films, back to life, and encourages him to wreak havoc in Freddy’s old stomping ground of Elm Street.
Robert Englund returns as Freddy, and a bunch of comparative unknowns make up the remainder of the cast, the most recognisable of which is Kelly Rowland from pop group, Destiny’s Child. The performances are all pretty average, and the tongue is firmly in the cheek throughout the proceedings.
There are some impressive special effects, but it is mostly a case of lots of gore, which I believe is pretty much the norm in this type of film.
The film itself is above average, with the main drawing factors being the body count and the two horror ‘legends’ coming face-to-face. However, since the release of the Scream films, and Final Destination (1 & 2), it seems to be increasingly more difficult to either come up with something truly scary, and truly original. This film is a prime example of this, but I’m sure fans will lap it up.
