Whole Lotta Led

Whole Lotta Led – 02 Academy Glasgow Friday 6th March 2009
There are many “tribute bands” playing gigs all over the world covering music from the Beatles, The Eagles, Abba, Queen and too many more to mention. “Whole Lotta Led” are unique because they are the only Led Zeppelin tribute band who tour full time.
Unlike the majority of bands on the tribute circuit,” Whole Lotta Led” are a sound-a-like as opposed to a look-a-like tribute band. Right from the opening number, these guys thundered through Led Zeppelin classics “ The Immigrant Song” , “Nobody’s fault but mine”, “Going to California” “Dazed & Confused” of course “Stairway to Heaven” Whole Lotta Love” and the excellent “Rock ‘n’ roll”.
The evening consisted of two sets. The first part of the show laid the foundations and, at forty five minutes, was in my opinion just a little too short. After a fifteen minute interval the band returned and opened with a ten minute acoustic set, after which they turned up the power again and rocked for a further hour and a half.
All four members bring the talent which is required to play Led Zeppelin’s music note perfect and more importantly the vocal performance of Lee Addison is eerily close to Robert Plant.
In over 35 years of attending all types of live music gigs, I’ve never been a huge fan of drum solo’s but watching Graham Twist recreate “Moby Dick” whilst adding his own unique style was totally awe inspiring. Witnessing this amazing drummer play emphasised what a power house John Bonham was to the sound of Led Zeppelin.
Nick Ferris on Guitar was absolutely spot on in his playing of the very complicated guitar pieces that were significant of Jimmy Page and the audience showed their enthusiasm when Nick launched into a series of blistering guitar solos. An outstanding rendition of “Stairway To Heaven” had the audience enraptured from the opening note, right to the very last guitar lick. Finishing the set with “Whole Lotta Love” and “Rock ‘n’ roll”.
Geoff Hunt’s bass playing was 100% on the money as he thundered through the set standing unassumingly at the side of Lee Addison. Collectively these four guys worked their socks off and provided a superb evenings entertainment of classic rock by the greatest rock band ever.
If you get the opportunity to see these guys perform at a venue near you, make the effort and go along to the gig, I can assure you that if you have any interest in live music and appreciate quality musicianship, you will have a fantastic experience. Great musicianship, rock music as it should be and all at a very affordable £12.50.
