LOL Comedy Club  02-06-09

Kirkcaldy’s Adam Smith Theatre is the venue for Fife’s premiere comedy club LOL, ‘laugh out loud’. The young talented Daniel Sloss a finalist in the ‘So You Think You're Funny?’ new act competition, 2008, when he was just 17, now a regular writer for Frankie Boyle on Mock the Week is the inspiration behind LOL as well as resident compere. The first LOL in May was a complete sell out and was a superb night. The second LOL we missed because we were out in Greece.  The third held on Thursday 2nd July had a superb line up, Barry McDonald, Keir McAllister, Bob Graham and Gus Tawse with the next one not until September because of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August.
What Geoff and I have seen of Daniel we absolutely love and the developing maturity is obvious. The first LOL I attended was also Daniel’s first gig as compere, not that you would have known. Last nights LOL showed him relaxing even more in to this niche. He was also using some of the material from his solo debut Fringe Festival show ‘Daniel Sloss Teenage Kicks’ to be performed at the Pleasance Dome Wednesday 6th to Monday 31st August at 7pm. What a coop for a young performer one of the main Fringe venues at a prime time slot!
However back to the show Daniel’s first guest Barry McDonald, Barry is not totally new to me, his material ranges from his interpretation of speed limit signs, confusion when watching overweight people walking, the British diet which can now be considered in lengths and his despair when his pop icons do TV ads.  This opening act sucked us in and entertained us with his set, which was all too short. I will definitely be looking out for him in the future.
Secondly the gorgeous Keir McAllister, Geoff and I have seen Keir several times usually at The Stand Comedy Club in Edinburgh. We know when we see Keir’s name on any list we are in for at least one superb act. So I had seen some of his material before but it is quality stuff and it was interesting to see the audiences’ reaction. As always his set was just too short. McAllister may not have his own show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August but look out for him in shows at The Stand Comedy Club and the Underbelly, ‘Best of Scottish Comedy’.
After a short break Daniel entertained us for a short while before introducing Bob Graham. Bob is a 25 year old from Falkirk who is either in a time lag or so laid back he is almost horizontal. His material made comment on 16 year old females in Dundee under achieving, feeding pigeons sandwiches, looking for red tape and one of his friends brilliant job. Unfortunately Bob just did not do it for me on the night the previous entertainment made his delivery almost seem lazy.
Our final act was Gus Tawse this Aberdonian’s delivery is also somewhat laid back but to me was much more appealing. Geoff and I have seen Gus before so I knew I was in for another quality act. His opening comment on his Scottish/Turkish heritage had me in hysterics from the off.  Much of his material is short one-liners, no long involved stories from him. Although Gus was great his droll presentation was perhaps not the best finish to a very hot evening, both in context and in temperature.
I am looking forward to the next LOL and we will be covering Daniel and Keir during the Fringe.
