Geoff
and I first saw English born Fifer Daniel Sloss at The Stand Comedy Club
in October 2008, we were very impressed then and the few times we have
seen him since our admiration just keeps on growing. Despite travelling
far and wide Daniel has taken the time not only to bring comedy back to
Fife, by starting up a comedy club in the Adam Smith Theatre complex,
but also by compering the gig. What
started off as an intimate event in the theatre bar with an audience of
40 soon snowballed into a sell out gig for 150. Not only that but I saw
at least 20 people being turned away on the night.
I
was lucky in that I actually got a return and managed to get to sit
front and centre. Daniel was nervous about the evening as he has not
compared before, this was not at all obvious. He came over as confident,
approachable and as ever very, very funny. He did have the luxury of
presenting four quite different, yet equally talented, comedians. Rab
Brown, Sean Grant, Daniel Webster and Mark Nelson.
In
the first half Daniel introduced Rab Brown. Rab a chunky Glaswegian who
looks a little like a grizzly bear covers subjects from fire-engines
full of hen-night slappers, lack of luck with females to toying with
same sex relationships in bear-bars which strangely enough came full
circle to fire-engines. Geoff and I both saw Rab at The Stand in
Edinburgh in June 2008 but had not seen him since.
Sean
Grant followed Rab to close the first half. Geoff and I have both seen
Sean at The Stand (also in 2008) having enjoyed his set previously I
knew I was in for a good time. Sean likes dogs and not cats. He also
covers controversial subjects from paedophiles to ugly kids, genetically
altered dogs to rubbish Christmas presents.
After
a short interval Sloss introduced us to Daniel Webster who is a
self-confessed lazy person. He certainly has a very laid back approach
to his comedy and revels in his wordplay, some of which I missed.
Although the rest of the audience seemed to love him I personally would
like a second or third viewing before making up my mind.
Finally
my fellow ‘Doonhamer’ Mark Nelson and as with Daniel Webster Mark is
new to me. His humour is definitely darker than that of the others with
subjects covering pints, staying overnight, Germany, Paris the USA and
cheese sandwiches! It was occasionally more disturbing than funny but
left us wanting more.
If
this first LOL is anything to go by Daniel Sloss will have a hit on his
hands and Geoff and I will be torn between Edinburgh and Kirkcaldy for
our Thursday night comedy. For further gigs and information go to the
