Way back in 1997, when one4review was just a twinkle in my eye, I got into watching BBC’s Stand-Up Show after Match of the Day finished each Saturday night, where a number of up-and-coming young comics did their stuff. Prior to this comedy had been a bit of a mystery to me, but I certainly quickly got into it and appreciated the talent on offer and especially that of a young long haired Irishman, a certain Ed Byrne.

As luck would have it the following August Mr Byrne was presenting his show ‘A Night at the Opera’ in the old Gilded Balloon Main Theatre and persuaded Sheila that we should attend. We did, and have barely missed any of his local performances since.

Ed is currently touring his smash hit and sold out 2008 Edinburgh show Different Class, a show which Sheila reviewed back then, but for me it was the first time seeing it.

A packed Adam Smith Theatre in Kirkcaldy were with him and up for a great time from the off. Byrne is a natural raconteur and his soft Irish brogue allied to his keen observational wit and wicked sense of humour ensured that one and all had a ball.

His show is well constructed and written, one would expect little else from this comedy maestro, he seemed so up for the experience I’m sure we got even better value for money than most. Byrne chatted with his audience, recounted tales of his recent marriage, stories of his parents, stories of... you name it, he probably gagged about it!!

At times Byrne was self deprecating about his status in the comedy world, his DVD sales and looked back when he was expected to be the next big thing, warning others to watch out. Byrne need not worry about not being popular, the lad has a large following and it was encouraging to see that at this gig a huge chunk of the audience were barely out of their teens. Obviously his stuff on YouTube, numerous appearances on the likes of Mock the Week and Graham Norton Show have not done his profile any harm.

The underlying theme of his show was about placing within the class structure with in Britain and where, or he fitted, or didn’t into it. If I had a word of advice, don’t worry about society’s place for you, as comedian you are in a Different Class, and a true master of your art.
