When Geoff became ‘Social Convener’ at our
Bowling Club and suggested having our first ever comedy night, several
hundred thoughts ran through my head. Not all positive.
However our first act was approached, accepted
and confirmed within weeks. So far easy. We then had several yeses who
for one reason or another dropped out. Finally we had a running order at
this point I was still a little sceptical would all these great
comedians actually deem to come over to Dalgety Bay and perform in front
of a room full of bowlers?
The night dawned Geoff, Mark Roberts our
compere and I were pacing round the club and grounds not able to settle
then half an hour before showtime our headline act arrived, Yehhhhh! Ten
minutes or so later a group of people were seen walking down the road,
OMG the rest of the acts en-masse arriving on foot. I still could not
believe it.
Everyone got settled and the show began Mark made a few announcements
then without fuss introducing ‘Elaine Malcolmson and Niall Browne’,
both from Northern Ireland or Nireland, as they call it started off with
a set sampling their up and coming Fringe show. This may not be the
fastest show you will see, in fact at times Elaine is almost horizontal.
She is almost the straight woman to Niall’s country bumpkin then out
comes the cleverest lines you almost miss the treasure enclosed. They
work so well together I would love to see them again. Geoff is going to
their Fringe show “Elaine Malcolmson & Niall Browne: All Kinds of
Everything”

Following a short break Mark introduced Sian
Bevan, although Geoff and I have seen Sian before it was some time ago
so our memories were not that fresh unlike Sian’s performance. Despite
only having a short slot she captured us, and our collective funny
bones, very quickly and seemingly easily. Her Eco warrior looks belied
some of the material she was performing. I’m not sure if she has had a
break from the circuit or if we have just missed her but we will both be
on the lookout for this young lady in future.
Mark then introduced Stand Comedy Club
stalwarts Stu and Garry. Now I’m not sure if Stu & Gary share a
brain, if there is some form of telepathy going on or if they have
worked together so long each knows what the other is thinking. It is
almost scary at times to watch this pair work a room. They also seem to
try and make not only there audiences laugh but enjoy corpsing each
other. Having seen them perform several times before I knew what I was
in for, or though I did, whether it was the audience or the fact they
were so relaxed they did one of the tightest funniest sets I have had
the pleasure of seeing them do. I had to reach for my inhaler. Now as we
have also seen Stu as compere and Gary do his own stand up I wonder if
we can persuade Geoff, Gary and Stu to consider a second DBBC night of
comedy some time in the not too distant future. If not at the Edinburgh
Fringe Festival “Free & Easy” 8 dates only at the Stand Comedy
Club.

We first saw our headline act (30-10-2008) just
under a year ago and were blown away by his talent then. Just prior to
his first solo Fringe show “Daniel Sloss
Teenage Kicks” at the Pleasance Dome, Daniel accepted our
invitation to perform giving him a chance to try out some of his
material. I am delighted by the way this young man has developed in one
year and can see a brilliant future for him. I have only seen him
performing short slots at The Stand or as compere at Fife’s very own
comedy night LOL at the Adam Smith Theatre in Kirkcaldy (first Thursday
of every month except August). His relative maturity, relaxed on stage
persona, scope of material rival some of the ‘more experienced’
comedians I have seen. I am hoping he remains fully grounded whilst
climbing up the steep slope to stardom but having met his mum I’m sure
she’ll do her best.
The only complaint of the evening came from a
mature member who said ‘I thought there’d be more adult language’! How long till we do it all again? Who Knows but the night was
so brilliant it will be hard to replicate.
