Yet another Star Sunday at the Stand in
Edinburgh and the man in residence on 15 November was Aussie Brendon
Burns.
As befitting a man of his status and standing,
long before ‘doors’ the queue was way down the street with punters
eager to see the man perform as only he can. The number of people
looking, unsuccessfully, for returns was massive as well.
Burns
has been a personal favourite of mine for a number of years, from his
darker phase, gradually seeing the emergence of the man he is today, and
I have been in awe of his undoubted talent since day one. And I am
certainly not alone in this judging by the sell-out’s wherever he
goes.
Brendan hit the stage promptly at 8-30, to a
rousing reception and proceeded to entertain one and all for around two
hours, time that passed way, way too quickly for all.
Although he has a reputation as the typical
Aussie Alpha male, and certainly he can come across as this
occasionally, there is a comic master on stage and I’m sure that a lot
of his stuff is said with his tongue firmly in his cheek.
Having seen his Edinburgh show this year, as
always, some of the material was familiar, however there was plenty of
brand new stuff too, his gigs in Glasgow the previous couple of days,
his travels to America and culture differences encountered and even his
change of Facebook status, all delivered as only he can, but unusually
perched on a stool, no longer the prowling Burnsy of old. His knack to
interact with the audience, and occasionally laughing at his own
material, one could have felt he was just chatting with you in the pub.
His material, as always, is thought provoking,
well observed and written and delivered befitting the consummate showman
that he is. Burns can be somewhat self-deprecating at times, brash at
others, sensitive as well, in fact the complete package.
Due to Sheila being laid low with the dreaded
lurgy she missed out, along with everyone else that wasn’t there, on
yet another superb experience. However, she did not miss out completely,
Brendon spoke to he briefly on the phone, wishing her well and said
he’d be back up soon. I really hope so, ‘cause we will be first in
line for tickets, so get behind us, but make sure you are in the queue.
You wouldn’t want to miss out on seeing the absolute master at work.
