The
Basement – The Empire, Belfast Tuesday 14th April 2009.
If you
are looking for a great mid-week night out in Belfast, free admission,
and a great band, then look no further than The Empire Basement. Every
Tuesday night from 10.30 a fantastic band called
“After Eight” perform a range of material from jazz standards
to up to date material from the Kings Of Leon.
The
trio’s first set features mainly jazz and commercial covers which at
times seem to hark back to the swinging sixties of Soho. Without wishing
to be unkind it’s almost a parody of the “Jazz Club” Cliché on
The Fast Show, but the musicianship is absolutely top standard. The
guitarist’s influences appear to range from Martin Taylor to George
Benson with his own twist. Ably Backed by an excellent drummer and bass
guitarist, I had the feeling that this is how it would have been
watching early performances of Cream back in the 60’s.
Performing
effortlessly, this trio had the audience clapping along and dancing
throughout their first set and enthusiastically appreciating every
number.
A major
surprise was unveiled when the Trio returned for their second set of the
evening, it was if a different band had taken the stage. The material
was bang up to date with the Kings Of Leon and covers of Stevie
Wonder’s “Superstition” mixed in with Tom Petty’s “Free
falling”.
For a
great value night out in Belfast get yourself along to see this
excellent band.
