It
is likely that this will be our last gig for 2008 and where better for
it to be than at our second home, Edinburgh’s Stand Comedy Club, and
with the festive season in full swing it was a bursting at the seams for
fully an hour before show time. The attraction? An excellent club and a
mighty fine comic.. Reginald D Hunter.
A number of years ago, probably on his debut at
the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, I was advised to try and check out this
up and coming talent ‘cause he was going to be big. Unfortunately my
schedule didn’t allow me to see him that year, a situation that has
not occurred since as he is one of the first names on my list, and his
star seems to be still in the ascendance as the cross section of ages in
the queue were both a testament to the man’s excellence and possibly
from his many TV appearances when the Reggie you get then is a far
different beast than the one that performs live.
Resplendent in red this Georgian born London
based comic wowed his crowd with his unique style. Hunter is a naturally
funny man but his comedy is rather clever and occasionally dark. Not too
many one liners for him, he observes life and has the raconteur’s
skill in making it interesting and funny.
His ‘deep south’ accent ensures that one
has to really listen to the man to get the very best of the wordsmith,
but do so; it is really worth the effort. While this comedy giant is
never afraid of confrontational issues with material on Josef Fritzl,
the use of the ‘N’ word and his thoughts on relationships, I always
find him fascinating to listen to and the time spent listening seems to
go at twice the rate of some other artists.
Hunter is taking a well deserved rest for a few
months, recharging his batteries, and writing more material which will
hopefully form the basis of next years Fringe show. When pressed he said
he would not appear if he didn’t have anything new to say. Reggie.
I’ve never known you lost for words, so we’ll see you in August!!
