KT Tunstall at The Alhambra Dunfermline

It always amazes me how long it takes someone to become ‘an overnight success’. Usually they have put in years of hard graft and blood, sweat and tears before something clicks and Pow! There is a new star in the music firmament.
Fife raised KT Tunstall certainly is an artiste that certainly followed the path, gigging in Fife and Edinburgh to small groups of people for a number of years before the breakthrough happened with the release in 2004 of the album ‘Eye to the Telescope’ which went platinum in the UK , USA, Canada and Ireland. Songs such as ‘Black Horse and the Cherry Tree’ coupled with her iconic performance of the song on ‘Later with Jools Holland’, ‘Other side of the World’ and ‘Suddenly I See’ catapulted her into the rock star status, and the follow up  studio album ‘Drastic Fantastic’ cemented her position.
Ms Tunstall is  a favourite of festivals and sandwiched between Glastonbury and T in The Park, around 1700 lucky people in Dunfermline were able to witness this pocket dynamo perform her first gig in Dunfermline at the newly reclaimed Alhambra Theatre.
Following on to a reasonably short set by local Fife band 'Pictish Trail'  which keep the crowd entertained prior to the main attraction, promptly at 9-00 pm KT hit the stage flanked by her backing band consisting of Luke Bullen, drums, Sam Lewis on guitar, Arnulf Linder on bass Kenny Dickensen, keyboards together with two backing singers and this combo proceeded to rock the house for the next 90 minutes.
The set consisted of a mixture of her older material together with the newer stuff and an occasional new song. She played with the obvious enjoyment of an artist that loves playing live and this vibe flowed from the stage and engulfed one and all from the onset. Folky stuff cheek by jowl with the more rocky numbers, the audience loved them all, from both aforementioned albums with perhaps my favourite song, Ashes, from her slightly less known album, KT Tunstall’s Acoustic Extravaganza also in the mix.
Possibly for most, the one woman live recreation of ‘Black Horse’ or the finale of ‘Suddenly I See’ may have been the favourites and I would have to agree that they were excellent, but then I don’t think that there were any low points.
I have really loved KT’s stuff since I first became aware of her in 2005, but know having seen her live for the first time I certainly hope we will not be waiting too long for the next gig or perhaps another album. She moves onto ‘T in the Park’ on Friday 11 July and for future gigs, news and merchandise check out www.kttunstall.com
