Dream Maker Productions - April 2008 |

For the fourth time in the last year I was present as this extremely talented ensemble entertained their enthusiastic crowd with a mixture of music and comedy for almost three hours. Over these four gigs we have witnessed quite a few different performers however with regulars Jacqui Hannan, Irene Burt, Lorraine Dobie, David Mutch, Joe Hannan and compere Bill Blenman again with us, the quality of the evening was assured. They were joined for the night by Nicola Rafferty and Lisa Parke, the first time these ladies had appeared for us and they gave a different dimension to the show. The
general format was similar previous shows, a mixture of top quality
singing interspersed with self-written comedy sketches that always get
the venue rocking with the genuinely hilarious material that is offered,
predominately by Jacqui and Irene, but supported by Joe and Lorraine at
times. There is no way I could do justice to their inventiveness; I just
suggest you check them out for yourselves.
As
well as being a mainstay of the comedy, the almost too talented Jacqui
Hannan can sing up a storm too and I was pleased to see that this side
of her persona was more to the fore than usual. Whether it is singing
solo or in a duet with Lorraine, nothing seems to faze her and the
performances were excellent. The highlight? Difficult to say, but her
rendition of Olivia Newton-John’s ‘I Honestly Love You’, just
maybe shaded it for me.
The
talent in the Hannan family is not restricted to her though, her son
Joe, already an established performer in musical theatre, again enhanced
his reputation. I was not surprised by his rendition of ‘Stars’ from
Les Mis, excellent as usual, but the inclusion of ‘Razzle Dazzle’
from Chicago! really hit the mark.
Lorraine
Dobie was also up to her normal high standard singing classics, show tunes
and for me, a fabulous rendition of Whitney’s Dolly Parton written
‘I Will Always Love You’ was the icing on the cake.
Nicola
Rafferty predominantly was the country diva of the night, and although
this is not my favourite style of music I really enjoyed her
performances, both as a soloist and her duet with Lisa Parke during '9 to
5’. Lisa herself was used more sparingly, but this lady has an
excellent voice also, one that I’d like to hear again.
Although
he was doing a briefer stint than normal David Mutch was in top form once
again. A selection of show tunes mixed with standards, all delivered
with style and control, coupled with his matinee idol good looks always
has the ladies at the club in a fluster. In fact one in particular has
almost to be penned in to stop her storming the stage whenever he appears. Hard
to pick a highlight of David’s selection, as it was all excellent, but
‘From Russia with Love’ and the difficult ‘Bring him Home’ from
Les Mis could just of edged it for me.
Bill
Blenman had as always the difficult job of linking these constituent
parts together, doing the techy stuff and even giving us a couple of
numbers of his own. How he copes I don’t know, but somehow he does…
and keeps coming back for more. I believe the next time they visit could
be as far away as December that is unless I can track them down
somewhere else.
Dream Maker Productions do all their work for Charity, specialising in Kidney Research UK so in itself it is worth booking them to perform, however if the four shows I’ve witnessed are typical of their quality, and I have no reason to think otherwise, then try and book them for your function. This can be done by contacting Bill Blenman at billblenman@btinternet.com or on 07777 604077
