Bruce Fummey is the larger than life product of
a Scottish mother and a Ghanaian
father and has been described as the finest comedian on the Afro Celtic
comedy circuit. A bit of a backhanded complement me thinks, as there are
not numerous of this description that spring to my mind.
However, that description aside, Fummey seems
to be highly respected as a stand-up, a corporate entertainer and as an
after dinner speaker, so this sometime school teacher is constantly in
demand and his travels taking him on regular trips to the Gulf and also
throughout this country entertaining as he goes.
Sheila and I never get a chance to review his
annual Fringe shows as Ben usually grabs the reviewing ticket, so it was
with some relish we joined an intimate audience to see his ‘07 Fringe
show entitled About the Jacobites at the Stand comedy Club.
Perthshire based Fummey quickly established his
rapport with the audience, chatting with many and telling a little of
his heritage before launching into a very informative yet extremely
funny show based on and around the Jacobite period of history.
Being the token Englishman in the audience I
was a little wary that a possibly anti-English slant may have been
predominant, but given the researched facts that this was really a civil
war with many English on the side of Bonnie Prince Charlie likewise many
Scots lining up with the Duke of Cumberland’s forces.
I was never a fan of history during my school
days, however if I had been taught by people with the style and
presentation of our Bruce, and then mixed in with his gags to break up
the facts then who knows.
Fummey is a very cerebral comedian, often
self-deprecating, but always entertaining and I would thoroughly
recommend him to anyone no matter what their nationality. One thing
I’m sure of is that I will probably be putting up more of a fight to
review his show come Fringe ’08, so Ben, you better beware!!
