Brigadoon

A little like the place itself “Brigadoon” the musical seems to appear suddenly then vanish into the ether for 100 years.  Ok perhaps not quite a century but it certainly was the last century since I saw a production performed.
Brigadoon is one of these musicals people either love or hate, I do actually like it. It is also one which is very true to the cinematic portrayal. People under a certain age will probably never have heard of this musical but very few will not recognise the song ‘Almost Like Being In Love’.
It is very unusual to be able to get tickets for a Kirkcaldy Amateur Operatic Society show at the last minute but this one in particular is not completely sold out, which I found very surprising as this show is superb.  No doubt helped by Michael McFarlane playing American Tommy Albright on a hunting trip to Scotland finding more than he bargained for, and Deirdre McFarlane as Fiona MacKeith quietly confident that, despite the ‘blessing’ on the village, she will one day find the one man she can love forever.
Thanks to the ‘blessing’ or ‘curse’ Brigadoon vanishes into the highland mist for 100 years.  The villagers see this passing time as just one night. On this particular day Andrew MacKeith’s (Ian Brown) youngest daughter Jean (Jillian Ogilvie) is due to marry Charlie Cameron (Paul Copland).  Two 20th century Americans lost in the mist stumble upon the village and life is changed for Fiona and Tommy. Jean’s old flame threatens to ruin the wedding day and destroy the village by crossing the boundary condemning them to sleep forever.
As well as the charm of both young couples, Fiona and Tommy and Jean and Charlie we have the comical pairing of the other American Jeff Douglas (Clark Graham) and femme fatal Meg Brockie (Laura Paterson). Laura steels the show on several occasions with her man eating ways and colourful upbringing, through the musical numbers ‘The Love of My Life’ and ‘My Mothers Weddin’ Day’.
All in all this is a good fun simple love story in which everything turns out well in the end.
