Fringe 2008 on the whole was missing the
gorgeous and talented Adam Hills. Yes
Adam did do four late night shows at the assembly rooms with Jason Byrne
along with one or two guest spots but no full Fringe show.
I did however see him filming on the Royal
Mile, making a ‘mockumentary’ (his words).
It was therefore great to see he was coming to
the Stand Comedy Club Edinburgh on Sunday 12th October. Sure
enough the sold out signs soon went up, the queue started about 18-15
with doors opening at 19-30 and there were many people looking for
returns. Those of us who got in had an amazing night and it was obvious
Adam enjoyed himself as much if not more than we did.
It appears that most of his set went out the
window and pure genius improvisation and top of the head comedy took
over. Those gems he discovered in his audience included a gentleman and
his daughter doctor or Doctor Daughter, who was eclipsed by Adam from
Cyprus, now living in Glasgow, this forensics officer enlightened us
with two almost totally unbelievable stories from his work in Wales and
a possible new show for Adam Fringe 2009 “CSI Aberystwyth”. There
were also several people who work in Banks, which after the news over
the past few days could not be more topical.
He did manage to get in some of his prepared
material including Sign language and its humorous international
interpretations of signs for countries. His time in Beijing as
Australian commentator on the Paralympics, partly prompted by his Aussie
TV work and his personal disability or as he prefers mutant. His
amazement at the inter group racism and rivalry.
Adam is not only very funny, ultra talented,
gorgeous looking but also a very generous man. Rather than having people
missing the last few moments of his show he paid for a taxi for them,
out of his own pocket.
I hope it is not too long until I get to see
this antipodean hunk again.
