I
have seen Starlight Express in three different settings, originally in
the Apollo Victoria Theatre London, in the Playhouse Theatre Edinburgh
in 2005 and again in 2007, each show having a very different skating
area to utilise. After seeing the original I was surprised how much I
enjoyed the last tour and this one despite the new version being
entirely end-on.
Some
of the London cast members have again joined us Mykal Rand as Electra is
now also the Company Resident Director, whose entrance is more and more
sparkling and spectacular than ever.
Jamie Capewell is now a swing, Mark Hedges is The Prince of Wales
and Robert Nurse is Hip Hopper 3, all having originally appeared in
London.
Tom
Kanavan returns as Greaseball, Gavin Ashbarry as Dustin, Matt King as
Trax and Ruthie Stephens a swing, have all been in Edinburgh before.
Other members of the cast have been on other tours of Starlight all over
the world.
This
show just keeps the momentum going from start to finish and I was
looking forward to hearing Kristofer Harding as Rusty and Michael
Samuels as Poppa / the Starlight Express in the
'Starlight Sequence'. This is one of my favourite scenes in the
show and having seen Michael in Whistle Down the Wind, Inkle &
Yarico and The Lion King I was looking forward to hearing him again.
The
two most spectacular scenes are Electra’s entrance and the crash, 'One
Rock 'n' Roll Too Many' but the energy, power and enthusiasm displayed
on stage is superb and Starlight is definitely one of the best feel-good
musicals out there, get your skates on and see it if you possibly can
before the train departs, the station.
