Mark Roberts Valentine Spectacular

For those of you who do not know the area , Dalgety Bay is a ‘new-town’ like conurbation of around 12,000 inhabitants approximately 10 miles north of Edinburgh. Not the first place that springs to mind for an innovative brand new production. The venue of choice being the local Bowling Club, again maybe not at the cutting edge, but it was there that I was amongst the sold –out audience on this cold winters evening.
Everything started normal, well as normal as it could when Mark is in residence. I have already said that the guy is almost too versatile, whether delivering his Adult Comedy show, his cheeky chappy fifties and sixties style party night and his much vaunted Freddie Starr Show, so which artiste in residence was there tonight?
In truth, none of them, although there were bits of most at times. I’ve seen Roberts perform many times, but the slightly different song set in the first half was unusual for him, but as with everything else he produces the quality will always out, and this was no exception.
However, it was after the interval that the real style shift took place. He is always a bubbly personality and sells his songs almost as much on his humour as to his undoubted vocal abilities. Not tonight. Roberts played it straight and introduced his significant other, the stunningly attractive Lynsay Eastwood, and they then proceeded to relate a story, was it even their story (?), all 45 minutes of which was told in song.
Mark has been a pro for years so you would expect him to be good, which he certainly was. Lynsay on the other hand is not a professional, she is a bank executive, but I would defy anyone walking into the gig to know that by her commanding performance. Given also that this was the debut both of the piece and to a paying audience as well… Wow!
Speaking to Mark afterwards he said that they had plans to develop it further, adding another 15 minutes or so, and once that was in place hopefully take it on the road as part of his selections to be booked.
So there we have it. What do I like more? 50’ singer? cheeky chappy? adult stand up, or this new slightly more serious side? I just don’t know, they are all so good. I think I’d have to say what ever I’ve just seen, so the new show as it …today!
However, given that the adult comedy is being performed at Carnegie Hall Dunfermline on Saturday 17 March, if you asked me then I may have changed my opinion.
