Regular readers of this site will know by now
of the exploits of a certain Mad Mark Roberts and of the undoubted
talent and versatility that this all round entertainer offers, no matter
what guise he has adopted for an evenings performance. He is equally
adept as an adult stand up comedian, a fifties / sixties singer, his
Freddie Starr show always plays to rave reviews and recently on a couple
of occasions I have witnessed the introduction of his fiancée, Lynsay
Eastwood, to give their shows another dimension.
Roberts as always is the consummate
professional. His banter with the audience seems to come as naturally to
him as breathing and his singing talent is up with the best. The first
part of the evenings entertainment was Mad Mark singing his trademark
50s & 60s numbers majoring on his favourite, Buddy Holly, but other
material also found it’s way into the set as well, all designed to
please all of his enthusiastic audience. After around half an hour of
this superb fare, enter Lynsay. Now unlike Mark she has not been a pro
for years, but as at their Valentine show reviewed previously, I would
defy anyone to know this by hearing her sing. Ms Eastwood’s material
is mostly more modern than her other half’s, but the superb vocals are
of the same high standard.
A similar format ensued after the interval,
banter and classics from Mark and Lynsay singing the likes of Shakira
and KT Tunstall songs amongst others, culminating with a couple of duets
and if anything these numbers were of even a higher standard than their
solo performances. Their voices blend so well together and their choice
of material complements their undoubted talents.
The gig, although over two hours long, finished
way too soon for me and speaking to numerous people afterwards I was not
alone in my opinion.
Could it have been improved? Well, only
possibly if Lynsay had the confidence to match her talent and talk to
her crowd a little between her songs and if they paired up and performed
more duets… and of course an extra hour would have not gone amiss!!
