After an extremely busy week for us Sunday saw
our return to what has become our second home, The Stand Comedy Club
Edinburgh, to witness the set from reigning T4’s King of Comedy Andrew
Maxwell.
On a freezing cold December night the club was
packed to the rafters such is the draw of this very funny Irishman.
Maxwell was nominated for the If.Comedy Award during this year’s
Edinburgh Fringe for his show ‘Waxin’ , which was not surprising
judging by the audience reaction when I saw it.
Sunday’s performance reprised a little of
that material, but for me anyway, there was a whole raft of new stuff.
The way he commands his space is amazing. Not for him the prowling of
the stage, he spends a fair chunk of his set seated on a stool, but it
is his presence together with extremely funny material and his engaging,
cheeky smile that has people sucked in.
Maxwell does not tell jokes, what he does do is
tell extraordinary stories that have occurred recently in his life, and
he is not afraid to tackle any subject head on going full tilt into
routines on religion, politics and nationality, but I feel it would be
hard to take any real offence.
He is a master of his craft in my opinion, and
what comes across is the fact that his thoroughly loves his job and the
rapport with his audience is evident that most of them love him too.
