Thursday
29th June 2006 saw Bruce Devlin compering a line up of;
John Ross, Scott Agnew, John Henderson and headline act Reginald
D. Hunter.
Although
Bruce is new to Geoff and myself he is a regular compere at the Stand
and runs his own weekly show ‘The Sunday Laugh – In’. He has
appeared regularly at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and will be
Presenting a Monday to Friday midday show at the Stand
‘Devlin’s Daily’ This free show has an impressive proposed
list of guests, check out the Stand’s website for further
information. www.thestand.co.uk
First
up was John Ross who has worked with the popular Improve Troupe
‘Dance Monkey Boy, Dance!’ I saw him in “Stand-Up: The
Musical” in 2003. His descriptions of playing Ned Scrabble, Ned
Ludo and Ned Monopoly were both topical and intriguing, whilst the
games you play within your own family, where you stay seated as
long as possible so as not to have to do anything, like 'go for
the messages' roughly translated from the scots to go shopping, or
get some tea are both observational and funny.
Scott
Agnew declares his persuasion on arriving on the stage and
continued to go on about being gay for his whole set.
John
Henderson for me was a breath of fresh air. Although it seemed to
take him a little time to settle into his stride. As soon as he
got there he just sailed away with the audience in tow. Despite
having worked with fellow Irishman Jason Byrne, his delivery is so
laid back he was almost horizontal. His thing seems to be views on
complaining and about how lazy we can be with convenience items
simply encouraging further laziness.
Following
John I thought Reginald D. Hunter might have his work
cut out for him but how wrong was I!!
His 2006 Fringe show is entitled ‘Pride and Prejudice and
Niggas’ and he used his time at the Stand to give us a small
taster of what might be!! He
did say his set isn’t finalised yet but I certainly had a good
giggle at the material used on the night. That is before I noticed
and became somewhat obsessed by his hands?
Despite being of a reasonable size they are so well defined
and beautifully proportioned I had difficulty keeping my eyes off
them and much to Reginald’s surprise asked to examine them after
the show. He is one
comedian to whom I would have no difficulty in saying that for a
great evenings comic entertainment I'd fully trust being left in
his hands.
