Status Quo

Question. Which artist has had the biggest number of UK hit singles? I must admit I didn’t immediately get the right answer. But when I thought about it more I eventually came up with the solution. Status Quo!! Why not! After all they have been around for 40 years so I should not have been surprised I suppose. But 61 hit singles spread over 5 decades that’s certainly some achievement.
These living legends of a band are still packing them in towards the end of their current tour ‘Just Doin’ It’, and the sell-out gig at Edinburgh’s Usher Hall was certainly testament to their enduring popularity, as these rock gods strutted their stuff for the excess of 90 minutes, and still their die hard fans where wanting more.
Belying their somewhat advancing years, the guys Francis Rossi, Rick Parfitt, Andrew Brown, John ‘Rhino’ Edwards and Matthew Letley rocked through a whole selection of their best loved numbers, all delivered in their inimitable style while strutting, posing but professionally delivering their good time rock’n’roll music that judging by the age demographic of this audience, appeals to teenagers as well as us more mature, and I use the term loosely, citizens.
Caroline, Down, Down, Whatever You Want, Paper Plane, Roll Over Lay Down, Something About You Baby I Like, Gerundula, Down The Dustpipe and of course the ubiquitous anthem ‘Rockin’ All Over the World are just a selection of the hard-driving, no nonsense hits that they performed on the night, such songs as they have been delivering for years.
This years tour is drawing towards a conclusion, but undaunted, the band are already planning a new album in 2007 and further tours towards the year, check out their website for further details on www.statusquo.co.uk
But this is not where it started, not content with one support act, the Quo had two.
Initially opening up proceedings were a three-piece Australian outfit called TwentySevens. These antipodean gentlemen gave good account of themselves with their set consisting mainly of self-penned material with the odd excursion into a classic cover. Steve Tyson guitar, John Barr bass guitar, and Dave Parnell on drums and percussion are the hard working trio.
A short pause while gear was removed and then the second support, a Swiss band called Vivian consisting of Roger Vivian - Vocals/Guitars
Marcel Jeker - Guitar/Vocals, Adrian Müller - Bass/Vocals and Stefan Wicki – Drums burst onto the stage and thrilled the now full venue with their own material. These young guys are certainly ones to watch for the future, and I for one thoroughly enjoyed their all too short set.
The two above acts were certainly good appetisers for the afore described main course and if anyone was unfulfilled at the end of this marathon gig, well I certainly could not understand how.
