Mark Roberts is a cabaret artiste who has
recently returned to Britain after being a successful performer in
Spain and The Canaries for the past seventeen years, and is now
beginning to make a name for himself in East Central Scotland. As
well as being a very able singer, the man also has a mean line in
comedy and having watched one of his ‘Live ‘ DVD I can confirm
that he is very funny also.
However it was not the stand-up routine
we got at this particular gig, Mark the 50’s and 60’s singer
was the artiste in residence, and he regaled the packed crowd with
a highly professional evenings entertainment. He managed to cover
something in the excess of 35 song ranging from Elvis, Tom Jones,
Jerry Lee Lewis and majoring on Buddy Holly and The Crickets,
someone he can sound so like, if one closed one’s eyes you’d
think he’d come back from the dead.
Roberts interspersed his numbers with his
cheeky chappy banter that at times is reminiscent of Freddy Star,
especially as he performed the entire act in a shocking pink mock
drape coat.
As a value for money performer he would
be had to beat, he performed with just one short break for the
excess of two hours, but this still wasn’t enough for the crowd
that night and he was forced back for an encore to close the
night.
I’m sure it won’t be too long before
he is as popular in Scotland as he has been in Spain, I know for
sure he will have this reviewer there once again as soon as I get
a chance to see him again, either as the singer or as the
stand-up. He is almost too versatile, but I’m sure he will also
have a long career ahead of him.
