Having
seen Craig Hill on TV numerous times I finally decided to go and
see him live in 2004.
Yes, only 2004, looking back at past
reviews I was shocked to discover I have only seen him live over
the past two and a half years. Having said that we seem to have
made up for this omission by seeing more of him recently. Not only
Fringe performances, at The Stand Comedy Club Edinburgh, as
audience members for his superb, but sadly as yet un repeated, TV
show ‘Craig Hill’s Out Tonight!’, and at his recent gig in
The Adam Smith Theatre Kirkcaldy.
Yes we do know by now that sitting front
and centre at Craig’s shows we will be picked on and since we
have been getting recognised by him, we get even more stick, but
for once we nearly had Craig speechless. When he saw Geoff and
myself he announced to the assembled audience his stalkers were
in, I ripped open my shirt leaving him facing a picture of himself
won by me at the filming of his TV show last November. This
backfired as he dragged me up on stage to show the T-shirt to
everyone.
Fifers
are frequently the butt of Craig’s regional jokes, yet this Fife
audience seemed to have a great time, although the chap next to me
squirmed every time the attention focussed on him. Also, it
doesn’t seem to matter what I do with my hair it is never quite
up to Craig’s exacting standards and I get the beautiful ballad
which starts ‘Hey lady! You Lady’ sung to me with his unique
lyrics!
Apart from one or two remembered sections
we were presented with material that was totally new to us and
thanks to him I will now be fully aware of the differences between
Gaelic as pronounced by Scots and Gaelick as pronounced by the
Americans!
Craig might not think much of one
Americans description of eggs but ‘Awesome’ is certainly the
word to use when describing the kilted phenomenon that is Craig
Hill! The dictionary definition was made for him
“AWESOME- an emotion of mingled
reverence, dread and wonder, inspired by something or someone
majestic or sublime! Respect tinged with fear!”
Craig
Hill at The Adam Smith Centre Kirkcaldy Fife Saturday 4th
November 2006.
