What can I say about Jason
Byrne that either Geoff or myself haven’t said before?
Geoff and I have seen
Jason’s Comic Genius, since catching his act on TV as part of
the Channel 4 show “Edinburgh or Bust” in 98 and have ensured
that we’ve see him at every Fringe since.
We have never yet seen a
show, which could be described as the same over the years. Yes,
you do get the odd similarity showing through, but there always
seems to be a different slant on things. His interaction with his
audience is a great part of his performance.
We went to see him in
Glenrothes in Fife on Thursday 17th March, St
Patrick’s Day and I am still trying to recover from the
brilliant craic we had. His
audience seemed to be a gift for him. His difficulty in
understanding the Fife dialect only added to the hilarity. Jason
is never vicious towards his audience and always appears to be
laughing with us and not at us.
The majority of the crowd
had not seen Jason live and going by the howls of laughter and the
favourable comments most of them can’t wait for another
opportunity to do so!
He always seems to enjoy
performing but he kept saying he was having so much fun he felt he
was at a giant party, or had died and gone to hell forever,
punished by coming out to perform for the same audience over and
over again.
I would love to watch Jason
over a period of several nights during either one of his tours or
at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, just to see how much his act
changes night after night. But for the sake of my sanity (however
little is left) and my health (I’d run out of underwear and
inhalers), don’t think it advisable to try.
I do love his sense of
humour and will be back to see him as often as I am able. Even If
I have to fight Geoff for the tickets to do so!
Jason’s UK tour finishes
in Forres on 19th March, then he is off to Australia
for the Melbourne comedy festival 2005!
He should be back in Scotland for the Edinburgh Fringe
Festival in August.
