As part of the spring season of shows comedy
legend Jim Davidson brought his national tour to Dunfermline’s
Alhambra Theatre, a venue that is really becoming a major player in the
entertainment arena.
For a man who has been somewhat less in the
public eye over recent years, it was difficult to turn on the TV a few
years ago without seeing him on it, there was a very respectable number
of punters who turned out to see him cut it live.
The evening began promptly with opening act
Clive Cooper hitting the stage. Blackpool born Cooper has an impressive
CV as an actor in the likes of Shameless, Emmerdale and Clocking Off
amongst others, he has a very good singing voice and a enough gags in
his repertoire to fully cover the 40 minutes or so he was centre stage.
Okay, not all the material was topical, yet I know he will never be
short of work. I suspect he has a solid grounding in the ‘Northern
Clubs’ or in Brits Abroad resorts like Tenerife or the Spanish Costas,
delivery and style seemed to match that remit. That’s not to say he
didn’t go down well in the larger theatrical space, ’cause he did.
After the interval with the music still
playing, suddenly the vast stage was filled by the presence of one man,
headline act Jim Davidson. He was straight off into his set, delivering his material as
only he can.
Certainly although he has had a lower profile
in recent times the innate ability obviously has not waned. Davidson
is brash and opinionated! So what we all knew that. He is controversial!
No surprise there. He is perhaps the most non-pc comedian around. Some
things never change. And something else that doesn’t change either is
that he is extremely funny, laugh out loud and belly laughingly funny,
even if sometimes you wonder if you should really be laughing at what he
says.
For the excess of an hour and a half Davidson
has the audience with him, telling funny stories, anecdotes and
experiences of his rather larger than life. He is often the butt of his
own stories, but then out come the killer lines.
I have to admit I was not particularly looking
forward to his show, but still went along with an open mind. I have to
say I thoroughly enjoyed myself and had an excellent time, although I
would have to say he seriously is not for everyone.
