Although this musical by Jason Robert Brown
has been around for a few years, first performed in 2001, I was
completely unaware of it until recent publicity and then suddenly it
seemed that everyone was talking about it and it’s short run at
Fringe 2007.
This two hander, featuring as Nadim Naaman
as Jamie and Hannah Wilding as Cathy is unusual in the fact that the
story is told ‘backwards’ from the breakdown to the inception by
struggling actress Cathy, and ‘forwards’ from first date to
break up by successful writer Jamie as the tale of their romance is
related in song.
This is slightly confusing initially, but
the quality of the voices together with the simple but effective set
and simplicity of the direction make this an eminently watchable
musical. The songs, none of which are showstoppers in my opinion are
pleasant enough, and now knowing how it is played out would be keen
to check it out again.
