With seven productions on the fringe the
HWS Rembiko Project from L. A. have a large group of high school
students in Edinburgh. In six of those productions use just some
of the students, whereas ‘The Mikado County USA’ displays the
talents of everyone.
Being very impressed with last years Pirates
of Penzance: County USA I was looking forward to seeing
this one. Although it
did not have the spectacular set of Pirates Mikado County is very
well adapted for the talents of those performing the show, the use
of the performance space and the adaptation of Gilbert and
Sullivan’s operetta into the modern conference setting.
Two of the leading performers from this
year’s production of ‘Othella’
are again prominent in this.
Spencer Case who is Desmond in
‘Othella’ takes the romantic lead as Nanki-Poo, deservingly to
my mind as he has a beautiful voice.
Siobhan Heard gets to project her
phenomenal voice in ‘Othella’ in the lead role. She now has a
chance to both sing and display her talent for comedy in the role
of Katasha, her facial contortions need to be seen to be believed.
Alexandra Kalinowski as Yum-Yum,
Jon-Michael Miller as Ko-Ko and Adam Frank as Pooh-Bah are all
very talented and make the show a joy to watch.
The
whole cast work well together, the direction is cleverly done and
everyone seems to enjoy themselves. I look forward to seeing the
other shows on offer this Fringe.
