The students at St Francis Xavier Sixth
Form College (SFX), based in Clapham, South London, were given the
storyline for Mozart’s Don Giovanni and asked to bring it into
the 21st Century.
‘Don G a Hip Hopera!’ is the resulting production.
With only 3 performances and not being listed in the Fringe
Programme or C’s own brochure the kids are facing a lack of
publicity, which is a shame as this was as good a show as almost
any seen this year.
The kids seemed so relaxed and
comfortable during the show and put on a great performance. My
only criticism is that despite the use of individual mikes Luis
Andres Gonzales, Kylei Holmes Lewis and Adenyi Sodimu the three
rap narrators were difficult to hear and understand (it might be
the age thing).
The dancers Maria Bosco, Lydia Okia,
Nancey Nartey and Katrina Thomas all move well but seem to be used
to a larger performance area.
The newly engaged couple Zerlina (Monica Smith), Masetto (Froilan
Legaspi) along with The Pastor (James West) all had small parts
yet played them to the full.
Donna Elvira (Adetoun Anibi) Don G’s ex-wife and Donna
Anna (Toni Robinson) the Pastors daughter and innocent virgin
until Don G had his wicked way, both act and sing beautifully.
Don G (Kyle Alexander) and Don Ottavio (Justin Ikpeamagheze
Chinyere) keep the action going and stay in character well. Last
but not least Marcus Mikely as Leporello Don G’s right hand man
and the comic genius of the piece stole the show for me.
SFX adapted this show into a very
enjoyable and creditable production.
