Being
a fan of most forms of music Geoff and I are always on the lookout
for something new!
This
I found in Samba Sene & Diwan. Samba Sene was born in Senegal
and moved to Scotland 7 years ago, he writes his own material and
sings in English, French and his native Wolof (Senegalese).
The band Diwan has a core membership of 5;
Samba Sene (vocals), Akin Fatumbi (bass), John Walsh
(guitar), Stuart Dinwoodie (percussion and Kora) and Willy Molleson
(drums) they are joined on Saturdays and Sundays by Doug Tiplady and
Nick McCallum who play horns. Diwan is a Wolof word meaning ‘the
whole World’ and this seems to be the whole ethos of the band come
along and join in.
The
show has guests every night and on Sunday 19th August Samba
Sene introduced Alex, sorry I couldn't catch his other name, to start off the set a very
pleasant guitarist and singer.
Then
the party really got started, the small stage seemed to be crowded
with an eclectic mix of characters and instruments making a heavenly
sound, which the whole space seemed to echo and absorb.
I
thoroughly enjoyed this set but due to its late start I had to go
before the end, they are talking about doing a 2-hour show next
Fringe, which would be fantastic. If you get to the show allow an
hour after before you need to be anywhere . I also defy you to sit
still, the beats are so hypnotising you find yourself bopping in
your seat or up dancing.
I
look forward to seeing and hearing more of Samba
Sene & Diwan.
