There are melodies and songs from the swing
era that will last for ever. Whilst we might have the CD’s from
the bands and singers of the period, to see them performed live with
style was a joy. Red Hot Swing, a 10 piece band from Glasgow, has
built up a reputation for playing the music of the giants of swing.
It was no surprise that a near capacity audience enjoyed and gave
their concert great atmosphere.
Glenn Miller featured strongly in their
set. ‘In the Mood’
received a faithful treatment with a little bit of a humorous twist
from trombonist John Rollo. The band was joined on stage by
vocalists Kenny Paterson and June Love who performed around 5 songs
each. Kenny Paterson,
with a confident and commanding stage presence, has something of a
Mel Torme quality in his voice which suits songs such as ‘Thou
Swell’ and ‘Mack the Knife. June Love showed her versatility
with a mischievous version of ‘Bring me Sunshine’ and a poignant
treatment of Neil Sedaka’s ‘The Hungry Years’.
Drummer Ian Robb provided most of the links
with a west of Scotland type of banter and this did contribute to
the evening’s entertainment. Praise must also be given to Ian
Gilchrist not only for his contribution on trumpet but also, as the
Musical Director, for the selection of the varied musical programme.
