‘Possessed’ is comedy theatre,
showcasing the all round talents of Frank Woodley. At the outset,
there is a touch of stand up to outline the action ahead.
Louis Winkleman, a lonely reclusive ‘Mr
Bean’ like character, becomes inhabited by the ghost of 19th
Century shipwreck victim, Phoebe O’Leary, a beautiful Irish girl.
Astonishment turns to love then a split following a misunderstood
phone call. The action becomes hectic as the story is brought to a
conclusion.
The comedy is full of visual gags which
take place Louis’ flat. Think of the early silent comedies and
panto. The set is elaborate and on two levels. There is definitely
an element of danger in the stunts he performs.
This is a show which has its spectacular
and very funny moments. Frank Woodley doesn’t spare himself in the
energy he puts into his performance but the storyline didn’t quite
work for me – a touch too contrived to be fully convincing.
